With increasing number of patients with dementia, the concept of capacity or competency evaluation became very important. Physicians, specializing in dementia or memory loss evaluation may perform an independent evaluation of a patient’s cognitive status which is then relayed to an attorney or family members. This exam evaluates orientation, judgment, memory status and ability to make financial and medical decisions as well as safety to function independently.
The interview usually takes 45 minutes to one hour which is then followed by comprehensive written evaluation of the interview.
It usually requires two independent physicians to influence a decision on capacity or ability to make financial decisions. Dr. Yaskin has extensive experience in performing independent medical decisions regarding capacity evaluation.
